Singing Over the Bones: Reclaiming the Wild Parts of Yourself
Deep in the bone-cave of your being, there is a part of you that remembers. She remembers the taste of the wind and the language of the rivers. She is the one who knows without being told, who creates without asking for permission, who feels the turning of the seasons in her own blood. She is your wild soul.
And if you are like so many I have met, you may have had to ask her to be quiet. To be nice. To be practical. To be small. You may have tucked her away in a dusty corner of your heart for so long that her voice has become a faint echo, and her vibrant form has been reduced to a collection of dry, forgotten bones.
There is an old story, found in the lore of many lands, about a woman who finds the bones of a wild creature in the desert. She sits by the skeleton and begins to sing. As she sings, the bones begin to knit together. Flesh returns. A heart begins to beat. And the creature rises, powerful and alive once more.
This is not just a story. It is an instruction manual for the soul. It is time to sing over your own bones.
The Quieting of the Wild
We are taught, from a young age, to distrust this wild self. Her emotions are "too much." Her intuition is "illogical." Her creative dreams are "impractical." Her fierce boundaries are "unkind." So we learn to cage her. We trade our instinctual knowing for a rulebook written by others. We silence the inner song and replace it with a list of "shoulds."
But a life without this wild essence is a life half-lived. It is a river that has been straightened and cemented, efficient perhaps, but having lost its joyful, meandering sparkle, its power to carve canyons and nourish hidden banks.
Listening for the Whisper
The first step in the singing is simply to listen. To sit in the quiet and ask, "Where did I leave you?"
She speaks in the language of longing. That sudden, inexplicable ache you feel when you hear a certain piece of music. The restlessness that arrives when your life is too tidy, too predictable. The flash of anger when your boundaries are crossed. The dream that visits you again and again, the one you dismiss as foolish. The pull to walk in the rain, to dance in the kitchen, to buy the paintbrushes you never use.
These are not random events. They are her whispers. They are the scattered bones, calling out to be gathered.
The Song of Reclamation
Your song does not need to be perfect. It only needs to be sincere. It is sung through deliberate, courageous acts of remembrance.
The Song of Sensation: Go outside. Press your bare feet into the grass or the sand. Let the rain fall on your upturned face. Remember you have an animal body that craves the elements. This is a verse of your song.
The Song of "No": Practice setting a boundary, not with anger, but with the quiet firmness of a she-wolf protecting her den. Say no to what drains you. This is a powerful, resonant chord.
The Song of Creation: Do something for no other reason than it makes your soul feel alive. Bake a complicated recipe. Scribble a poem. Build a fort. Plant a seed. Don't worry if it's "good." The act itself is the melody.
The Song of Trust: The next time you get a gut feeling, a "knowing" about something, follow it. Even in a small way. When you honor your intuition, you are singing, "I hear you. I trust you."
With every note, you are breathing life back into that which you had to abandon. You are telling your wild soul that she is welcome. That she is needed. That the world is waiting for her unique, untamed song.
It is a gradual returning. There will be days she is still shy, and days she will roar. Be patient. Keep singing. Gather the bones of your passion, your creativity, your fierceness, and your deep knowing. Sing until they stir. Sing until they stand. And then, walk with her, your wild and wonderful self, into the forest of your one, precious life.
